6 Natural Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

natural ways to beat the winter blues

Growing up in California I could never get enough sun!!  I’d be outside right after breakfast and wouldn’t come back in until the sun went down.  Even now, as I look out my window at the gloomy, chilly, January day, I feel all warm and tingly inside just thinking about lying in the sand with the sun warming my skin.  It just doesn’t get any better than that!

I had no problems at all with seasonal depression until I moved to Utah.  Most people unknowingly think the North Pole is the Arctic region of the world, but it’s not.  It’s Northern Utah.  And of course, Idaho too, because anyone that’s ever lived here knows the wind chill can compete with any harsh, frozen climate of the arctic.  Just ask my family who visits from California every winter with only hoodies to keep them warm.  They never learn.

For years I struggled with seasonal depression.  It would usually start soon after Christmas, about this time, and last until Spring- when I could finally get out and get some desperately needed sun!  Every fall I would actually have anxiety knowing what was coming- the gloominess, the cold, the lack of sun.  Winter was the most difficult time of the year for me, and for those around me.

As I have gotten older I have gained the skills and tools to help treat and prevent seasonal depression.  One of the most critical things I have learned in treating seasonal depression is to start early and hit it hard.  Depression is one of those things that when it takes control, it’s impossible to get out of the downward spiral without help.  So treat it early and treat it hard.

So I’m standing in line at the grocery deli trying to get a bite to eat before I keel over, and I’m watching the deli lady. She’s hopping around singing to herself, and occasionally when someone walks by she knows, she looks up from making our pretzels and yells hello with a laugh so loud it echos through the entire store. I’m amused watching this lady’s joyful expressions of life and I’m thinking to myself, “Is she really this energetic? How could she be this energetic?”
Then she turns to me and says, out of the blue, “I have so much energy I stay up till 3 am every morning and I’m 50 years old!”
I’m just starring at her thinking “Oh ya, well, I’m 38 and I feel like 50, so let me hop around and tell you all about it.”
She continues to go on and on about how good she feels all the time and then she stops and looks up like she’s come to a realization…”Maybe”, she says, “it’s because I don’t have any kids?!”
AH HAH! The reason is discovered!

Doing a cleanse- the right way!

cleanseWe’ve all heard the hype about cleanses, and I admit, there’s good reason for it.  Cleanses provide a long list of benefits for your health and emotional well-being.  Whether it’s weight loss or detoxification, more and more people are changing their health through cleansing.

Not too long ago I was reading an article on juice cleansing, and I was a little surprised when I read this regarding cleansing, “Headaches, throwing up, and diarrhea are normal. It’s a sign your body is ridding itself of built-up toxins.”  Umm, maybe it’s just me but if that’s considered normal reactions to a cleanse, then you can count me out!

Health Evolution

I’ve always considered myself to be fairly healthy.  I enjoy being active and stay away from harmful things.  I admit I succumb to the occasional dessert, but for the most part I try to make healthy food choices.  My family genetics aren’t something to brag about though.  I have pretty much all the major killers in my line- heart disease, diabetes, several types of cancers, not to mention hormonal imbalances, which all bring a little caution to my choices.  But ever since I started having kids (and putting a little more stress on my body) I’ve come to realize that maybe I wasn’t as healthy as I thought.  I mean, activity level doesn’t necessarily reveal your state of health.
