Doing a cleanse- the right way!

cleanseWe’ve all heard the hype about cleanses, and I admit, there’s good reason for it.  Cleanses provide a long list of benefits for your health and emotional well-being.  Whether it’s weight loss or detoxification, more and more people are changing their health through cleansing.

Not too long ago I was reading an article on juice cleansing, and I was a little surprised when I read this regarding cleansing, “Headaches, throwing up, and diarrhea are normal. It’s a sign your body is ridding itself of built-up toxins.”  Umm, maybe it’s just me but if that’s considered normal reactions to a cleanse, then you can count me out!

I am surprised to discover how common this way of thinking is!  I’m beginning to think that it is just me!  So that’s why I’m writing this- to share with people that it’s not supposed to be that way, and if this is happening in your cleanse then you’re doing it wrong!!

Let’s use an analogy to explain this further.  I like to think of cleansing the body like sweeping my kitchen floor.  When I sweep my floor I make sure to get around all the corners and edges, you sweep the dirt into a pile and get rid of it.  For this analogy, let’s imagine sweeping all the dirt out the front door.  Let’s think for a minute what would happen if I left the door closed while I’m trying to sweep out the dirt?  Where would it all go?  Nowhere.  Actually, it would surround me with a huge dust cloud and I’d end up with more things to clean.  Not too smart.  So how does this all relate to cleansing?

Our body is built with it’s own cleaning system, and I’m not just talking about your digestive system.  We actually have five main organs of elimination: our lungs, skin, kidneys, liver, and digestive system- six if you count the lymphatic system, but that’s another topic.  These elimination organs are very important to our state of health as they are constantly filtering out toxins and eliminating them through the proper channels.  So what happens when these organs aren’t working properly? Or if the channels are blocked, just like if I closed the door when I’m sweeping my floor?  Your body becomes toxic which leads to all kinds uncomfortable side effects, health issues, and diseases.

With all the pollutants in the world today, most people release more toxins in a cleanse than their body can properly eliminate.  When this happens it creates a blockage in an elimination pathway and the toxins have nowhere else to go but back into the body where they can settle in the brain stem, joints, lymphatic system, etc.  This results in headaches, skin rashes, diarrhea, constipation, emotional instability, muscle and joint issues, etc.  No wonder why everyone thinks this is normal, we are such a toxic people that our poor bodies can only do so much with the tools it has.

So doing a cleanse the right way is ensuring that you open the door to the proper elimination pathways– keep the bowels moving, cleaning the liver and other organs- so that you have a more comfortable cleanse.

If you pay close attention to the signals your body is sending you during your cleanse, you will know how to adjust your regimen to assist the cleansing in your body.  For example, skin rashes or itching indicate congestion in the lymphatic system and would benefit from a clay bath and extra attention on the colon.  A headache could signal a need for extra work on the liver, or needing extra water for the colon.  Emotional changes usually indicate an overload on a particular organ, depending on the emotion- anger will be from the liver, whereas fear would come from the kidneys, and grief or sadness from the lungs.

Here are some tools I have used to give my body additional support while cleansing:

  • Redmond Clay– use in a bath or foot soak.  This is very effective in pulling out toxins from all areas of the body.  Add 1-2 Tbsp to very warm water.  You could also add oils to this.  Soak feet for 15-20 minutes, or until the water turns cool.
  • Energy work– most people don’t even realize how much emotions contribute to the uncomfortable side effects of cleansing.  When you cleanse physically, you also let go of all the emotions that were stored in that area.
  • Foot zoning
