Most essential oils are very safe to use, especially when used properly.  But it’s important to remember that essential oils are very potent and can cause adverse reactions if they’re not used carefully.  By following some simple guidelines and using common sense, you will be well on your way to safely enjoying the many wonderful benefits of essential oils.

  • Do not apply essential oils undiluted (neat).  Dilute with a carrier oil first.
  • Some essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy or by those with asthma, epilepsy, or with other health conditions.  Be sure to research the safety precautions associated with each essential oil that you use.
  • Keep essential oils out of reach of children.  Children LOVE essential oils!  Make sure you don’t leave any bottles laying around for them to find.  When applying oils to infants and small children, ALWAYS dilute with a carrier oil.  If a child happens to find a bottle of oil and dumps it on themselves or a brother/sister, use a carrier oil liberally and frequently to dilute; wash with soap and water.
  • Keep essential oils out of eyes, ears, nose, mouth and any body opening.  Wash your hands after you use them as to not rub them in your eyes.
  • Remember LESS IS MORE.  Because essential oils are so concentrated you only need a small amount for them to be effective.  Just a drop or two will give you all the benefits you need.


Special Tips:

When an essential oil causes discomfort like headaches or nausea, it is usually caused by one of two reasons:  1. the oil has triggered a cleansing effect in the body, or 2. you might be experiencing an allergic reaction to that particular oil.

In my experience, I have never had an allergic reaction to an oil, but I have felt headaches and nausea from using too much of an oil and having a cleansing effect.  You can minimize this effect by supporting the organs of elimination (kidneys, colon, skin, etc.) any way you know how (using herbs, energy work, etc.), and drinking LOTS OF WATER!  Also, soaking in a bath with Redmond clay or sea salt for at least 20 minutes is great for pulling out toxins.
